What is hpv vaccine

BY Carol Carey 2020-07-27

In female malignant tumors, the incidence of cervical cancer is second only to breast cancer, ranking second, and most cervical cancers are caused by HPV infection. There are 460,000 new cases every year worldwide, and about 250,000 people die of cervical cancer every year. From 2002 to 2012, the incidence of cervical cancer increased steadily and became younger. Recently, the hpv vaccine has become popular, but many people do not understand this vaccine. What is the hpv vaccine?

Cervical cancer vaccine, also known as HPV vaccine, is a vaccine to prevent the onset of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is mainly caused by infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). This vaccine effectively prevents the onset of cervical cancer by preventing HPV virus infection, and can prevent human papillomavirus subtype mutations covered by human infection vaccines. The study found that 99.7% cervical cancer is caused by HPV infection. HPV can also cause other relatively rare cancers, such as penile cancer, laryngeal cancer, lung cancer and anal cancer. The main route of HPV is sexual or skin-to-skin contact transmission.

Human papillomavirus is a member of the papillomavirus family, abbreviated as HPV. There are currently more than 100 different types of HPV known, most of which are considered "low-risk" and are not associated with cervical cancer. However, 14 types of HPV are classified as "high risk" because they have been shown to cause almost all cervical cancers. Among them, the two highest risk strains HPV-16 and HPV-18 can cause about 70% of cervical cancer cases. HPV infection has reached consensus internationally in terms of epidemiology and clinical data, that is, HPV is a necessary condition for cervical cancer.

HPV is mainly transmitted through sexual contact, so every sexually active woman is at risk of contracting carcinogenic HPV. In addition, HPV infection can also be infected through direct contact in addition to sexual behavior: for example, after the hand touches an item with HPV, it may bring the virus into the reproductive organs during toileting or bathing; or the reproductive organs come into contact with the belt Items such as bath towels with HPV may be infected. HPV infections are more common among women, and data show that at some stage in life, 4 out of 5 women will be infected. If you are infected with high-risk HPV, you may progress to high-grade cervical lesions or even cervical cancer.

Before the advent of the vaccine, the main means of preventing cervical cancer was through cervical screening, that is, through the detection of shed cervical cells and further examination to find early cervical lesions and treatment. The advent of vaccines has made cervical cancer prevention methods more comprehensive and effective. It is worth noting that even if you are vaccinated with cervical cancer, you should still be screened regularly. There are more than 100 subtypes of HPV virus and more than 10 high-risk subtypes related to cervical cancer, and the vaccine is only targeted at some of them.

Based on the good clinical protection effect and safety data of HPV vaccine, the World Health Organization (WHO) encourages the use of HPV vaccine in the appropriate population to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer.
