Why can't you eat tomatoes when they are not ripe?

Male  24 years old 2018-06-23
When I was buying vegetables, I accidentally bought a tomato that was not too ripe, and took a bite with it. My husband would not let me eat it when I saw it, saying that unripe tomatoes should not be eaten. Why can't you eat tomatoes when they are not ripe?

Eating unripe tomatoes can cause discomfort. Green tomatoes contain alkaloid glycosides (solanine). Their shape is needle-shaped crystals, which are very stable to alkali, but can be hydrolyzed by acid. Therefore, unripe green tomatoes often feel uncomfortable when eaten, but the mouth feels bitter, and in severe cases, poisoning may occur. Especially when the green tomatoes begin to rot, their solanine will be destroyed. After the green tomatoes turn red, they do not contain solanine.
