Female  34 years old 2018-06-23
I checked for high blood pressure, and the doctor told me to take medicine. After taking care, I couldn't take antihypertensive drugs after drinking alcohol. Why does drinking antihypertensive drugs cause hypotension?

Taking antihypertensive drugs after drinking alcohol will cause hypotension, because ethanol and its metabolite acetaldehyde have vasodilator effects, which can enhance the efficacy of vasodilators. Especially when applying diuretic antihypertensive drugs such as thiazides, if you drink alcohol, you can increase postural hypotension. People who drink alcohol and blush have poor ability to metabolize acetaldehyde and are more prone to danger. Therefore, drinking alcohol should be avoided when taking these drugs.
