Vitamin D is very important for the development of the fetus. Vitamin D is necessary to maintain the immune function, nervous system function and calcium homeostasis of women during pregnancy. During pregnancy, the calcium required for fetal bone development comes from the mother's calcium reserves and is regulated by the mother's vitamin D (calcitriol). Vitamin D is essential for fetal bone development. A mother’s lack of vitamin D can lead to softening of the newborn’s skull, reduced bone mass, and the occurrence of rickets in children.
