Alcohol itself can directly damage the gastric mucosa. Alcohol can also cause cirrhosis of the liver and chronic pancreatitis, which in turn aggravates stomach damage. Smoking can promote the contraction of gastric mucosa blood vessels and reduce the synthesis of prostaglandins in gastric mucosa, which is a mucosal protective factor. Smoking can also stimulate the secretion of gastric acid and protease, and increase the damage to the mucosa.
